    V-14 Sheath

The retaining strap is too short to contain the knife. The sheath seems well made but useless.

    V14, kydex and leather sheath

Posted by Chad c on Aug 6th 2020

    Mark, as requested.

My review of the Spartan Blades V14, kydex sheath and leather sheath.

I have owned the Spartan Blades V14 for 18 months now. I bought this knife to practice the art of “Gutter Fighting” pioneered by Col. Rex Applegate. For this application, I have found no equal to the SBV14.

First, this knife is deadly beautiful...dare I say sexy! The blade grind is painstakingly symmetrical, hollow ground and has a center cannelure to help it out of jams, so to speak. Unlike the welded handguard (quillon) from the original versions, the V14’s is cut from the S35 blank with the same attention to detail as the blades symmetry. The G10 grips are radial grooved, rounded and sandwiched over the handle and quillon. Again, there is serious attention to detail throughout the build as the hand grips align perfectly to the edge of the knife. My knife is finished in black, is non reflective and has green hand grips. Smoking hot knife with the temperament of la femme Nikita!

Next, the balance of the V14. The knife is 2/3 blade and 1/3 handle which creates a nightmare for the builder to balance. Mark, Les and their crews have found the sweet spot on this knife and you feel that immediately upon drawing the knife. The knife balances on either front index finger groove without any wiggle; dead flat balance! This is necessary when rolling the knife between hands and keeping the blade aimed at the area of contact. The rounded and contoured hand grips compliment all actions performed and provides excellent grip.

The weight and balance of this knife come alive when it’s in the hand. The contour of the handle fits perfectly in the hand and creates a pronounced snap when you lock the blade into the slash. Very pronounced snap! The weight in the handle, being as heavy as it’s longer blade, adds incredible power to the thrust potential of this knife far beyond any other dagger I have found. Additionally, Mark and Les provided ample space forward of the handguard (ricasso) to roll the index finger over the outrigger ricasso to assist with extracting the blade from the target. This is not recommended on older versions of the dagger that carry the edge down to the handguard.

Improvements. I would prefer indexing grooves on the steel portion of one index finger groove. This might seem odd on a symmetrical knife, but I am picky that way...and I like to return the knife to the sheath with the Spartan emblem out because they made this knife for me. Additionally, I would like to see a super high polish version in black nickel offered as a limited edition some day.

Sheaths. I ordered my knife with a kydex sheath. The kydex is of high quality and includes several holes for multiple mounting options. The nylon belt attachment is very thick and the edges are very course which creates a nightmare for civilian clothes. Sanding the edges and working the nylon rigorously provided some improvement but it is still tough on clothes. This brought me to order the leather sheath.

The leather sheath is of high quality leather with smooth edges and is capable of multiple attachment options. The blade opening portion of the sheath is reinforced with steel screws and there are steel eyelets at the bottom for para-cord or leather straps. The upper attachment portion of the sheath is mollie capable and there are additional holes punched through to secure the sheath for rugged ops. The sheath has what appears to be a grivory thump strap that is removable. Overall, this sheath is versatile with quality throughout and compliments the knife very well.

Improvements. I would like to see a belt loop option. The mollie attachment portion is adequate and comes with holes that provide options to reduce the length of the opening but it is still a little loose.

Note, while no change is needed, the metal grommets above the opening of the sheath can come in contact with the blade when drawn. Operators should consider taping them over, I prefer hockey stick tape, to maintain noise discipline to avoid the “ting”.

Mark, Les and crew, well done! Your service, collaborations, attention to detail and pursuit of creating high quality knives is a testament to your lifetime commitment to be of service during the most trying times in the harshest of conditions. Thank you for building my knives.

    V14 leather sheath

If you own a spartan v14 dagger, this leather sheath is a must-have accessory. Excellent quality leather worked to perfection. Carry system allows for Attaching to Molle both forwards and in the reverse draw position. Love the added inlay of the spartan logo. My v14 dagger is a beautiful piece of art, now showcased in a leather sheath worthy of the spartan name.

Outstanding! Exactly what I was looking for!

This high quality sheath is a perfect match for
the V-14. I broke it in with Galco gunleather Draw-EZ and it fits like a glove, but draws like butter.
