Introducing the Spartan Honor (Challenge) Coin, a symbol of camaraderie and unity within our esteemed Pineland and Spartan Blades Team. This coin holds special significance as it commemorates the formation of Pineland Cutlery, Inc. in 2019, a union between Spartan Blades and KABAR Knives.
The concept of challenge coins has deep historical roots, with origins dating back to the Roman Empire, where soldiers were recognized for their achievements with specially minted coins. Even before the creation of formal challenge coins, soldiers would reward their comrades with oins to buy drinks, a tradition that carried on through history.
The tradition of challenge coins gained momentum, and Colonel Verne Green, commander of the 10th Special Forces Group-A, embraced the idea in 1969 by having a special coin struck with the unit's badge and motto. This marked the beginning of the active challenge coin tradition within his unit. During our time in the U.S. Special Forces, challenge coins were a distinctive way to test our Brethren's preparedness, hoping they wouldn't have their coin and would thus have to pay the price by buying a drink.
